Glass of wine a day may lower depression risk (souce:Zee News)

London: Drinking wine in moderation may be associated with a lower risk of developing depression, a new study has claimed. Moderate amounts of alcohol consumed may have similar protective effects on depression to those that have been observed for coronary heart disease, researchers said. Few studies have looked at the relationship between mental health and moderate alcohol intake. Researchers report on a cohort study that followed over 5,500 light-to-moderate drinkers for up to seven years. The results show an inverse relationship between alcohol intake and incidence of depression. The study participants were aged between 55 and 80 years old, and had never suffered from depression or had alcohol-related problems when the study started. Their alcohol consumption, mental health and lifestyles were followed for up to seven years through yearly visits, repeated medical exams, interviews with dietitians and questionnaires. The main alcoholic beverage drunk by the study pa

Poverty saps the brain: US-India study

Image
From a shopping mall in New Jersey to the farm fields of India, experiments show that poverty saps people’s brainpower and may lower IQ by 13 points, scientists said. The findings in the US journal Science suggest that being poor can drain a person’s mental resources, leaving him or her less capable of focusing on other things, like solving problems and controlling impulses. “Because you have all these other things on your mind, you have less mind to give to everything else,” said co-author Sendhil Mullainathan, a Harvard University economist. Rather than blaming poverty on the individual or the environment, the study suggests that the state of being poor exerts the same effect as losing a full night’s sleep or having lower intelligence. “We’re arguing that being poor can impact cognitive functioning, which hinders individuals’ ability to make good decisions and can cause further poverty,” said co-author Jiaying Zhao, a professor at the University of British Colum

Statins may also help slow human ageing (ref:zeenews)

Washington: Researchers have suggested that statins protect against DNA shortening by telomerase activation and promote healthy aging free of age-related diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer Specifically, statins may reduce the rate at which telomeres shorten, a key factor in the natural aging process. This opens the door for using statins, or derivatives of statins, as an anti-aging therapy. Giuseppe Paolisso, M.D., Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Internal Medicine, Surgical, Neurological Metabolic Disease and Geriatric Medicine at Second University of Naples in Naples, Italy, said that by telomerase activation, statins may represent a new molecular switch able to slow down senescent cells in our tissues and be able to lead healthy lifespan extension. To make this discovery, Paolisso and colleagues worked with two groups of subjects. The first group was under chronic statin therapy, and the second group (control), did not use st

The film starred Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel in the lead. "If today I remake 'Gadar' I can understand it will be very successful. India's economic growth slows to four-year low in June quarter (source:Reuters )

NEW DELHI: India's economy grew at the slowest quarterly rate since the global financial crisis in the three months through June, lower than expected and hurt by a contraction in mining and manufacturing, government data showed on Friday. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast growth of 4.7 per cent. June's figure of 4.4 per cent was the slowest growth since the Jan-March quarter of 2009. The Indian economy has been steadily losing momentum in recent years. Economic growth virtually halved in two years to 5 per cent in the fiscal year that ended in March — the lowest level in a decade — and most economists surveyed by Reuters in the past week expect 2013/14 to be worse. Rupee recovers after hitting record low of 68.75 (ref:NDTV)

The rupee breached past 68 per dollar and shares tumbled on Wednesday on growing worries that foreign investors will continue to sell out of a country facing stiff economic challenges and volatile global markets. The Indian unit recovered later. Foreign investors sold nearly $1 billion of Indian shares in the eight sessions through Tuesday - a worrisome prospect given stocks had been the country's one sturdy source of capital inflows, although net purchases so far this year still total $12 billion. The partially convertible rupee hit a record low of 68.75, down 3.7 per cent on the day, after posting its biggest daily percentage fall in 18 years on Tuesday. At 3.08 p.m., the unit was trading at 67.67 per dollar. "It is just impossible to put any realistic value to the rupee any more," said Uday Bhatt, a forex dealer with UCO Bank. Tracy McGrady retired on Monday (ref:Yahoo Sport)

McGrady worked his way through a star-crossed career after being selected ninth overall in the 1997 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors. His pairing with cousin Vince Carter on the Raptors should have led to years of Eastern Conference dominance in the wake of Michael Jordan ’s retirement, but coaching tumult, Toronto’s inability to send a max contract his way, and the lure of playing at home in Florida alongside Grant Hill sent him to the Orlando Magic as a free agent just three years into his career. Hill, sadly, would never recapture the All-NBA First Team levels of athleticism after suffering a series of crippling ankle injuries, and McGrady (with the Magic capped out) was forced to go it alone. For a while there, though, acting alone led to some jaw-dropping bouts of brilliance. In nearly 40 minutes a game with the Magic , McGrady averaged 28.1 points per game , all in an efficient, slashing matter that saw plenty of free throws and quick hits from the mid-range. In

Can instant noodles help combat world hunger?

As governments and food experts ponder over how to feed a ballooning global population, researchers claim to have found a possible solution: instant noodles. Instant noodles serve “an important role in satiating hunger and in sustaining lives for many worldwide, including those hanging on under difficult circumstances,” according to Deborah Gewertz, Professor of Anthropology at Amherst College in US and her two colleagues. In their new book, Gewertz and her colleagues examine the history, manufacturing, marketing and consumption of the ubiquitous foodstuff and make the case that instant noodles will have an increasingly significant global role in the coming years. “As a protean food designed for quotidian consumption, instant noodles have already shown a remarkable capacity to ease themselves into diverse lives,” she said. “We expect that the calories provided by the tasty, convenient, cheap, shelf-stable, industrially prepared instant noodles will remain important” as

Kareena Kapoor does not want husband Saif Ali Khan to kiss! (ref:Zee News)

Well, this is what we have heard lately. But before you draw any conclusion, let us put the whole deal before you. An entertainment tabloid reports that post-marriage, Kareena and Saif have made a policy that they won’t be kissing their respective on-screen partners. This explains why Kareena refused to kiss Emraan Hashmi in her upcoming film with him and even made it clear that she won’t lock lips with Hrithik Roshan in Karan Johar’s ‘Shuddhi’. Just a few days back, during a script narration session for a film Saif is supposed work on, Kareena too was present on the spot. Well, Kareena simply said that since she does not kiss on screen, then why should Saif do the same? Convinced with her point, Saif duly asked the writers to rework on the script to remove the scene altogether. In the past, and before marriage to be precise, Saif has kissed

Badminton stars of class and quality, from home and abroad, will descend onto the land from where Indian badminton really took off. For it was Bangalore’s Prakash Padukone who sowed the seeds that the game is reaping today. Prakash won the Commonwealth Games gold in 1978, the All-England championships in 1980, the World Cup in 1981 and the bronze in the 1983 World Championships. Prakash’s phenomenal achievements, when he had the scalps of the likes of Liem Swie King, Rudy Hartano or Morten Frost Hansen, made the world sit up. It was he who truly launched Indian badminton on the world map. The rest only followed in his footsteps. If the game has caught the imagination of the people today, Prakash deserves accolades like none other. He must be the happiest person to see the likes of  World No 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games silver medallist, and World No 12 Marc Zwiebler of Germany and No 41 Vladimir Ivanov (Russia) and Tine Baun (Denmark),

Three-fourths of its online population is under 35, says comScore report

India has bypassed Japan to become the world’s third largest Internet user after China and the United States, and its users are significantly younger than those of other emerging economies, global digital measurement and analytics firm comScore has said in a report. India now has nearly 74 million Internet users, a 31 per cent increase over March 2012, the report says. The numbers are lower than other recent estimates, possibly reflecting comScore’s methodology that only factors in PC and laptop-based Internet usage. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) pegged the number of Internet subscribers in India at 164.81 million as of March 31, 2013, with seven out of eight accessing the Internet from their mobile phones. The comScore report, on the other hand, puts mobile and tabled-based Internet traffic at just 14% of the total. “Mobile phone based Internet usage is a key component of Indian Internet usage, and I’d say the recent growth is being driven by
