Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first deputy prime minister, will stand at
597ft when completed in 42 months. It is almost 100ft taller than
China’s Spring Temple Buddha, the world’s current tallest statue at
502ft. It will be almost twice as high as the Statue of Liberty in New
York, which is 305ft. Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square stands at
170ft. The memorial will be set on a river island close to the Narmada
Dam and will be connected to an amusement park and a garden in Sardar
Patel’s honour by a bridge.
The current tallest statue is the Spring Temple Buddha located in the
Zhaocun township of Lushan County, Henan, China. It is a statue
depicting Vairocana Buddha and was built in 2002. It is 128 m (420 ft),
which includes a 20 m (66 ft) lotus throne.
