MUMBAI: About 57 people complained of a burning sensation in their feet after being reportedly stung by stingrays in Girgaum Chowpatty during the one-and-a-half-day immersions on Tuesday.

People complained of rashes and numbness in their feet and hands. "We called the police and fire brigade to ascertain what was wrong. That's when we realised that stingrays had come on the shore," said Ajit Patil, the shakha pramukh looking at arrangements at Chowpatty.

People who were bitten said that they felt numbness in their hands and legs and were hurting and they had developed rashes.

Deputy dean of Nair Hospital, Dr M Shah, said 40 people were admitted to the hospital. "All were started on antibiotics and painkillers," Shah said. He said the sting was not poisonous. "Most will recover in a few hours."

Of the other injured, 1 is being treated at JJ hospital, 5 at St George and 11 at GT hospital. BMC officials informed the pollution control board and the oceanography department to inspect the area.
